Fruit adds profit, pleasure to family farm
At the Roger and Wendy Holmes farm southeast of Plains, corn stalks crackle like brown paper bags as summer's last blast of heat readies the plants for harvest. Although the family home stands amid a patchwork of corn, wheat, milo and soybeans, one shouldn't mistake Holmes for a standard, row-crop farmer: he's also a second-generation fruit grower, tending to a harvest filled with trees and vines his father, Howard, planted decades ago.

Custer House draws visitors to Fort Dodge
Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer walked with high hopes through the door of the two-story stone and frame house, Officers Quarters at Fort Dodge, Kansas, that years later would be named for him. Had he known of that future honor, Custer would have been elated.

 

 

What is a Community Foundation?
A Community Foundation is a philanthropic organization working in a specific geographic area which, over time, builds up a collection of funds from a variety of sources. Many of the funds are endowed, meaning that the original assets donated to the foundation remain permanently in the foundation's portfolio of funds. Only the interest earned on the funds is used to make grants or to otherwise benefit not-for-profit organizations in the community. Two examples of how a Community Foundation work follow.

 

 

Love at First Sight
The first time I saw Akila, she was overweight, walked with a limp and seemed jumpy whenever anyone got too close to her. She had already had a bit of a rough-scrabble life. She was well known to the authorities and had been in and out of lockup since she was just a kid. She'd grown old and grumpy, but with a heart of gold.
