April Showers Bring May Flowers

By Karen Tanner

Ever wonder why there are lots of sunflowers some years and very few in other years? Or what the name of that pretty little purple flower is that grows along the road ditches in large blankets of color? Maybe the Friends of Finney Game refuge can help. Volunteer guides make tours available year-round to see the bison and explore the prairie at the Finney Game Refuge, located south of Garden City on the business route of U.S. Highway 83.

Finney Game Refuge is one of the last sections of native sandsage prairie in Kansas. Prior to state ownership, the refuge was a part of the federally owned and operated Kansas National Forest. I'll bet you didn't know there ever was a Kansas National Forest!
